I was coming home from dj’ing at Candybox last Thursday on the N5, very tired and quite drunk so I did the usual thing and put my ipod on and tried to drift off to sleep or at least to take the edge off my hangover. I settled down for the 45 minute journey to sunny Burnt Oak and my ipod did an amazing thing, it knew what songs to play, to soothe my head and ease me home. I can’t remember the full playlist but it threw up some nice mellow stuff from Ryan Adams and Sigur Ros amongst many others, it was great and my drunken state made me believe my ipod could read my mind. This gave me the idea to do a ‘stick the shuffle on’ feature that is completely unoriginal but should be a whole lot of fun so here it goes:-
1. Cold Criminals – Pink Mountaintops from Axis Of Evol
Taken from the new album which I’m really loving. Stephen McBean of Black Mountain produces another contender.
2. Rise and Fall – Millionaire from Paradisiac
Must admit I didn’t listen to this album much and my ipod hasn’t thrown up much of their stuff but this worked well.
3. What You Wanna Start – Fearghal McKee
Second appearance on this blog for this track, McKee of the recently reformed Irish band Whipping Boy gives an indication that he has more great tunes in him.
4. Cortez The Killer – Neil Young from Zuma
An absolute classic and the sort of thing I would listen to on a Sunday evening anyway, I think this is working………..
5.Moving – Suede from Suede
That kind of spoiled the little mix that was going on, one of the weakest songs from Suede’s eponymously titled debut, grrrrr!
6. Hannah and Gabi – The Lemonheads from It’s A Shame About Ray
That’s more like it, an album track from one of my favourite albums of all time; I never get tired of hearing this.
7. A Place Inside – Beth Orton from Comfort Of Strangers
A track from Beth’s forthcoming album which is really nice but admittedly one I might skip, quite short though
8. What The World Is Waiting For – The Stone Roses from The Complete Stone Roses
The B-Side to Fool’s Gold, and absolute stone classic chooooooooon!!!!!!
9. Fine Health Is At Home – Jerk With A Bomb from Pyrokinesis
Another Stephen McBean nom de plume, I think my ipod must be a fan, if the next track is Black Mountain I will do something silly……..
10. This Old Guitar – Neil Young from Prairie Wind
So she (my ipod is definitely a she!)is a big Neil Young fan as well, taken from last years album its an ok song telling the story of Neil’s lovely guitar, ahhhhhhhhhh!
DOWNLOAD DAVE’S IPOD MIX NOW!!!!!!!! ZIP FILE 47.4MB
So what did this prove???? My ipod is a big fan of Stephen McBean and Neil Young and likes to throw a curveball in the middle of a set, but that was mostly a coherent, not too annoying mix that I could have most probably listened to without skipping tracks, Suede excepted!

Richard Ashcroft – Keys To The World
“Mad” Richard Ashcroft was so-called because in his early days with (The) Verve he moved to London without wearing shoes. I think he proved himself to be madder than that by splitting up his band and going solo. On the basis of his two previous efforts he seemed to be missing his old band members and these accusations clearly rankle Ashcroft who always comes across as over-valuing his music. I personally would rather hear him do a very stripped down album because when it is just him and a guitar, Ashcroft’s songs sound a whole lot better.
Having said that, Keys To The World-his latest album is to me a huge improvement on Alone With Everybody and Human Conditions. The strong 1st single Break The Night With Colour should help sell a few records, as should the profile boosting appearance with Coldplay at Live 8 and there are other good moments, the strings on Music Is Power, the Neil Diamondesque Words Just Get In The Way and the gorgeous Sweet Brother Malcolm are all highlights for me but ultimately it makes me want to listen to the old Verve records and see what could have been.
Nonetheless, it is a pretty good effort and is definitely worth a listen.
too late!!!!!
