The Long and the Short of it

Wow, last night this blog reached 10,000 hits, thanks to everyone who has had a butchers over the last few months, keep coming back and I’ll keep giving you stuff!!!!! Just heard the new Be Your Own Pet album due out on XL Recordings in a couple of weeks and it is MAD!!!!!! Very Rock, very Roll I quite like it, you may be able to find it HERE.
So the new single to be taken from the record is Let’s Get Sandy(Big Problem), it is 59 seconds long and is a breathless thrash that I quite like. 59 seconds though????? Bit short don’t you think? This got me thinking of other short singles and I certainly can’t think of anything else so brief. I did type SHORT SINGLES into Google and all I got was a load of dating sites for midgets………………………….

So anyway, this got me thinking of the longest singles ever and I think a contender is My Father My King by Mogwai, an adapted version of a Jewish Hymn this 19 minute 33 second track is a perfect encapsulation of what the ‘gwai are all about. Starts off very quiet, gets a bit louder and more melodic then kicks off big time eventually ending in feedback and white noise. I love it and live it kicks arse and usually leads to some lightweight punters running for the exits. Put it on in the comfort of your own home and don’t sit too close to the speakers!!!

Another great guitar record coming this March is the new one from ex –Blur guitarist Graham Coxon. Love Travels at Illegal Speeds proves to be a great follow-up to 2004’s Happiness in Magazines and has at least 4 great singles on it. There are a couple of quiet ones ala All Over Me and one with a flute on for that matter, but that doesn’t make this a bad album at all, I actually like the flutes……………
