Hello pop-pickers, had a busy week dj’ing and drinking and stuff so sorry about the lack of updates, I’ll try to do more this week, honest!
Starting from today I am going to post one of my favourite albums every couple of weeks or so, I’m going to go for the sort of record that maybe didn’t get such a big reception at the time of release but has remained one of those albums that you never get bored of. So tonight I’ll start with…………………………………………….
SIX BY SEVEN – THE THINGS WE MAKE
The late 90s were a strange time for music in the UK, there were lots of bands getting signed and then getting dropped quickly but at least most of those bands were Britpop wannabes or also-rans. in the slipstream were bands like Ultrasound, Tiger, Warm Jets, Dawn Of The Replicants, slightly more challenging bands that didn’t really have a hope in hells chance of setting the world on fire let alone the top 20.
Six by Seven, for me were one of these bands from the get go, a great band that would always be criminally underrated.
The first I heard of the Nottingham based band was when they released a limited debut single European Me/Brilliantly Cute(both available on the album). A string of awe-struck live reviews painted a picture of an intense band at home on the live stage and when I eventually got round to seeing them I was not disappointed. Frontman Chris Olley is one of the most physically striking frontmen you could ever hope to see-he’s huge and he looks like the sort of chap you wouldn’t want to mess with!
The gigs had that kind of tension where the songs such as Oh Dear and 88-92-96 build and build and build-usually to a massive release and pure melodic white noise, it is little wonder that they were often referred to as a cross between Radiohead and Mogwai.
The Things We Make, for me remains their best whole album and one that everyone deserves to hear so here it is. In the meantime check out their other albums and in particular the few they released independently through their website www.sixbyseven.co.uk. The band were reported to have called it a day in the summer of last year but their have been whispers of a new album, line-up and live dates for this spring. My advice is to sample this album, fall in love with the band and buy what you can to help support such an under-rated but special British talent.

Footnote:
Six By Seven had probably their biggest UK chart success with 2002s I O U Love download here, it is a great song and I was surprised to hear what I thought was it while watching Donnie Darko for the first time. I soon realised it was a song that sounded like it a hell of a lot, that song is Under The Milky Way by The Church download here and if I didn’t love Six By Seven so much I would suggest a touch of plagiarism, but I do love Six by Seven so I won’t. Make your own minds up, listen now!!!
