Kickabout finds the next big thing...........
Had a look around HMV today and came across a brand new album by a band that are calling themselves ARCTIC MONKEYS. I was intrigued by the cover which as you can see above is really artistic and evocative of our times so I thought “What the hell….” And shelled out my hard earned £11. I got the cd home and put it on and I was astonished by what I heard. Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not (great title lads!)is the debut offering from these boys from Sheffield in the north of England and I have a feeling they are going to do well. The album is 13 songs and almost 41 minutes of indie punk funk all sung in a wonderful northern accent that I think is going to go down a storm when you get round to hearing them. Trust me on this one; I think I’ve found the next big thing here.
The lead singers vocal style reminds me of another great Sheffield singer of our time, JOHN SHUTTLEWORTH. Shuttleworth has surely been an influence on these young whipper-snappers, check the mp3s below and you’ll see what I mean.
I would have uploaded the album for you to download but I don’t think it’s fair to exploit this young band by putting their songs all over the internet, keep music alive I say.
I have included one Arctic Monkeys track for you, a track not on the album called Love Machine. This track proves that these boys are still writing great songs and I think a song like that could be troubling the charts before long.
REMEMBER WHERE YOU HEARD THEM FIRST THOUGH!!!!!!!
ARCTIC MONKEYS – LOVE MACHINE
JOHN SHUTTLEWORTH – Y REG
JOHN SHUTTLEWORTH – PIGEONS IN FLIGHT
Please note, the above article was written with tongue firmly in cheek and was inspired by the tabloid nonsense spouted by the likes of The Sun and The Star at the moment, honest it was!!!!!!!

Placebo – Meds
I quite like this!!!! Molko and his band have been very much maligned over the last few albums but this seems like a coherent, vaguely interesting record. Guest spots from V V of The Kills and Michael Stipe obviously help but if you can forget the fact that Brian Molko is an annoying balding dwarf then you might like this too!

The Kooks – Inside In Inside Out
Didn’t think I’d like this either what with the band forming in the real fame academy and the lead singer previously dating warbling wombling songstress Katie “Yawn” Melua, but what you have here is 14 pretty good pop songs that are a little mainstream indie but likeable nonetheless.

That’ll do for now, I’ll be back later in the week hopefully with a new Radio Kickabout. Just remember to look out for Arctic Monkeys though………………………………………..
